Simple Extractions
When a tooth is undamaged and can be taken out in one piece, it will generally be considered a simple tooth extraction. A simple tooth extraction is performed with forceps. Your dentist will apply the forceps to your tooth, rock it back and forth and stretch the supportive tissue until the tooth frees itself from the socket. Local anesthetic is used in simple tooth removal.
Surgical Extractions
When a tooth has been badly damaged or is broken beneath the gum line, your dentist will perform a surgical tooth removal. Surgical tooth removal requires that an incision be made in the gum tissue to access the tooth and its root. While local anesthetic may be used, general anesthesia or sedation dentistry is sometimes recommended. This is often the case with wisdom teeth extractions.
